There is an increased crossover in the work expected of and performed by the many types of processing, delimbing and harvesting equipment on the market today and, as a result, it is becoming more difficult to narrow down the machine categories defined for some of our technical updates. In view of that, this Tech Update on processors and delimbers has stayed as much as possible with machines purpose-built for these functions. This has eliminated from this column some controlled-fell felling heads that can also be used for delimbing and some dangle-head processors that are also used for felling. For readers who wish to obtain more information on these types of machines, the June/July 2001 issue of Logging and Sawmilling Journal contains a Tech Update on harvesting and felling heads, as well as a Specs at a Glance comparison of the harvesting heads on the market today.
CTR Manufacturing/Blount
The CTR 550 delimber from CTR Manufacturing is designed for large 
hardwood,
with a 28" throat that can handle stems from 4" to 28" in
diameter without readjustment and two additional rollers to reduce
friction and make pull-through faster. The five alloy-steel blades and a
floating bottom blade follow the contour of the stem. The CTR 550 is
cradle-mounted with a topping saw. The cradle mount allows the delimber to
follow the curve of the tree without guide arms, making it suitable for
delimbing trailers. It is also available on mobile units and the CTR whole
tree processor.

Denharco
Denharco offers its 4000 series of telescopic and one-piece boom
delimbers, modular concept machines that feature cable, chain or variable
drive systems. The redesigned carriage is a stand-alone component that can
be equipped with either boom. The hydraulic 
components,
now located on the boom itself, are easier to access, while the
ProCommander system controls all electrical and hydraulic functions. The
two holding arms now have a 50 per cent larger opening. Other features
include the improved XStream feed roller system and a power pull system
that enables increased boom traction at the push of a button. New cast
delimbing arms, combined with Soft Clamp, provide grip for even the
largest stems, the company says. The floating trough is now connected to
the boom base by a hinge system, while the tunnel type boom base, which
has a maximum opening of 32", is designed to lengthen the total
delimbing reach. The hydraulic transport positioning system lowers the
entire boom structure in a few minutes, readying it for on-highway
transport.
Denharco's new DHT650 is a processing head with harvesting capabilities.
Designed to work in the horizontal position picking trees up off the
ground, it also has the capability of tilting to vertical in order to hold
and harvest a standing tree. This versatile, multifunctional head has a
cutting capacity of 26" and can produce tree lengths, long logs or
short wood at the landing, the stump or behind a feller buncher. Or it can
be used for harvesting in both soft and hardwood applications. The
5,500-lb DHT650 features Denharco's Optilog measuring device, a heavy-duty
rotator with 1,500 foot pounds of torque, two large rubber or
steel feed rollers with 8,900 pounds of traction, two high-speed trimming
or bucking saws and two delimbing arms with a third holding arm.

Risley Equipment
The Sidewinder controlled processor head from Risley Equipment stands up
to the processing of large, difficult-to-handle wood, the company says.
Designed to handle stems up to 30 inches in diameter, the Sidewinder can
operate as a floating head or as a 
fully
controlled head. A flip of a switch allows the operator to float the head
for easy alignment when retrieving a log from the pile. In control mode,
the operator is in complete control of the stem with a 280-degree rotation
and a forward and back tilt of 40 degrees. Onboard valving simplifies
installation and reduces maintenance, while the need for only one computer
increases reliability.
Designed as a fixed length short wood delimber processor, the Maxxum Plus,
also new from Risley, is a drive roll delimber processor that combines the
accuracy of butt plate measuring with the speed of drive rolls. The butt
plate eliminates the need for a computerized system, simplifying operation
and reducing costs, while powerful drive rolls maximize capacity in tough
conditions. The Maxxum Plus maintains control of the tree in a horizontal
position while it delimbs, measures, slashes and sorts at the landing or
stump.
Risley also offers the Rotosaw Slingshot harvesting head, a single-grip,
stroke-type processor for felling, bunching, delimbing and processing.
Models include the S18R, the S21R and the S24B with capacities ranging
from 18" to 24".
The Rolly II drive roll harvester/processor features modular design and a
mounting bracket with 220-degree rotation. It fells, delimbs and processes
hard and softwood in cut-to-length or tree length. The three models-the
R18R, the R21R and the R24B-have cut capacities ranging from 18" to
24".
Risley's Lim-mit line of delimber/processors includes the LM2100 and LM
2300 stroke-type models and the LM200B and LM2200B roll-stroke models.

Cutting Systems Inc
Cutting Systems Inc (CSI), manufacturers of pull-through delimber heads
and slasher saws, offers the PTD-243, a rugged, four knife pull-through
delimber head with topping saw, designed for use in hardwood or pine for
maximum production and ease of operation. A wide throat opening of
24", coupled with the special roller and knife design makes pulling
through fast and smooth, the company says. The delimber, coupled with the
DL-4400 classic slasher saw, makes the loader complete. The DL-4400's
"dog leg style" saw box gives the loader operator a better view
and more grapple room when pulling the tree stems up for the next cut.

Pierce Pacific Manufacturing
Following on the success of Pierce's Monoboom DeLimbinator, Pierce 
Pacific
is responding to industry demands with plans to introduce its Telescopic
DeLimbinator in early 2002. Core concepts throughout the engineering and
design stages have been simplicity, the ability to fit on a 20-ton
carrier, a 26' tail swing and a weight of approximately 18,000 lbs. Other
planned features the company says will be incorporated are a maximum top
saw cutting diameter of 22", a maximum butt saw cutting diameter of
28", a feed force of 10,000 lbs, a feed speed of 13 fps, an arm
opening of 30" and accurate log lengths provided by a Pierce full
scale measuring system.

Votec Innovation
The Hornet 825 delimber/processor from Votec Innovation delimbs and
processes hard and softwoods up to 29" in diameter and, with the use
of a butt plate, minimizes the use of a measuring system. The butt plate
is activated by a single four-inch cylinder, providing the power of a pair
of three-inch cylinders but with fewer wear components. The adjustable
butt plate allows for cuts from 96" to 117" in length using only
one butt plate. With the tail swing of a standard excavator and a low
centre of gravity, the 825 requires less operating area than a stroke-type
delimber and is more manoeuvreable. An optional computer system allows up
to 10 preset lengths.
The spike configurations on feed roller wheels leave logs with less damage
and offer good traction force. Chained rubber rollers are also available.
Feed roller arms have a stronger grip, while large-size feed roller motors
offer superior feeding force, the company says.
Other features include: hydraulic hoses made of abrasion resistant,
four-braided hose; curved, heavy-duty steel delimbing knives; heavy-duty
steel frame construction; Vickers valves; a fixed knife for strength and
better delimbing quality; sealed rotator with low maintenance components;
and a lift capacity of 100,000 lbs in any direction.

Pro Pac
The delimbers from Pro Pac Industries Ltd include the PP393, the PP453,
the PP513 and the PP613 and offer grapple openings from 
20"
to 34" and maximum delimbing diameters from 18" to 32".
Optional heads for the delimbers include twin toping knives with an
8" capacity, a 24"-capacity bar saw head, with or without a
standard timing arm, and circular saw heads with an 11" or 16"
capacity. Other features include butt saw, butt plate, 3 1/2"
cylinder (rear only), measuring device (length and top) support cables,
drive motor, time delay, stroke limiter and independent rear grapples. The
delimbers feature 36' to 48' booms and a stroke of between 26.6" and
37.5". The Pro Pac delimbers are adaptable to all makes of carriers.
Pro Pac manufactures two slasher models, the 500 and 600, that feature a
60" saw blade, butt plates of 48" to 50" and 96" to
100". Cut lengths vary from 48" to 16'4". The 500 has an
overall length of 19'7", while the 600 is 28'7" in length. The
slashers weigh 5,000 lbs and 8,900 lbs respectively.

Denis Cimaf/GPL Equipment
The Levesque 816 delimber/slasher from GPL Equipment Inc combines a
conventional tree feller with a delimber/slasher to work directly at the
stump. The simple, heavy-duty machine offers unmatched cutting length
precision and high volume output, the company says, while protecting high
regeneration, using the same working path as the feller-buncher and
leaving the branches and tops on site. The Levesque 816 is easy to handle
and has the ability to pick up trees close to the machine. The delimber's
butt plates (two or more, according to requirements) allow precise cutting
lengths. Combining the machine with a conventional feller buncher results
in high stacking volume and productive loading of the forwarder. The
angled position of the delimber on the carrier provides excellent
visibility and ensures smooth and quick feeding of trees, the company
says. During tree slashing, the delimber is positioned close to the
ground, allowing accurate piling without damaging logs, while the low
centre of gravity ensures better travelling stability. Other features
include two sets of grab arms, hydraulic components and a purpose built
boom and stick.

Hahn Machinery
Hahn's HTL series includes the HTL300/F tree length processor and the
HTL250GT short wood processor. Powered by a 185-hp John Deere diesel
engine, the HTL300/F is a rubber-tired machine capable of delimbing and
bucking trees up to 30" in diameter. It features hydrostatic delimb
carriage drive, hydrostatic propel system, towable drive axles that enable
it to be driven up to about eight mph or towed at highway speeds and a
simple yet accurate measuring system.
The mobile track-mounted HTL250GT is more compact and is designed to work
both on and off the landing or at roadside. Fitted with an optional Hahn
160 loader, it can unload trailers and even load trucks, the company says.
Powerful and productive, the versatile Hahn HSW110 series processors
delimb, measure, buck, sort and merchandize both hard and softwoods up to
24" in diameter and are available with single or dual mode delimbing.
In stroke mode, the delimb carriage is moved back and forth over the stem
by means of two hydraulic cylinders, while in roller mode, stems are
pulled through the delimb carriage at speeds up to 11 fps. Powered by a
175-hp John Deere six-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine, the new
HSW110/C is an ideal system for loggers producing logs in 8' to 16'
lengths. Both self-propelled and towable, it offers state-of-the-art load
sense controls and can be operated by one or two persons.

Waratah
Waratah Forestry Attachments, through an exclusive supply agreement with
Innotec Engineering Inc, is now distributing Innotec's 1850 RS fixed
rotation harvester/processor, now referred to by Waratah as the HTH245.
With high and low feed speeds to match the type of wood, the HTH245's high
speed is for fast delimbing of smaller trees, while low speed with maximum
torque is for tougher hardwoods. A dedicated 10" stroke system also
helps in processing heavy-limbed wood, the company says. The four
delimbing arms, plus a floating upper knife, offer clean, efficient
processing. The high-speed .404 (10 mm) pitch chainsaw has a built-in
lubrication system with its own reservoir. A powerful 220 degrees lateral
tilt wrist and forward tilting link enable precise placement of the tree,
minimizing residual tree damage after processing and allowing stems to be
placed in the best location for retrieval. The PLC measuring and control
system is programmable to eight lengths using control buttons on the
display monitor.

Quadco Equipment
Quadco offers both stroke delimber/processors and grapple style processor
heads. With the acquisition of Forespro last year, Quadco 
entered
the delimber market with telescopic and monoboom models. Robust, low
maintenance and easy to work on, the affordable delimbers were designed by
the Sigouin family, who were among the pioneers of stroke delimbers more
than 25 years ago.
Quadco's grapple processors are available in three sizes: the 22"
5600 and two new heavy-duty models, the 24" 6000 and the 30"
7500. All are equipped with a top saw and can be configured as a processor
or harvester. The main saw can be a disk or bar and chain, while the boom
mount can be either dangle, solid or a unique combination of solid and
dangle to best match the application.

Timberline Inc
The Timberline Model SDL2a delimber/processor offers superior 
delimbing
quality, both in softwood and more importantly in large hardwood, and has
been designed for the logger seeking diversification in today's
competitive markets, the company says. Flexible in application, whether
working at a landing, at the stump, on flat or steep terrain, the
Timberline SDL2a is capable of handling stems up to 30" in diameter,
as well as multiple stem delimbing in smaller wood areas.
