College of the Rockies, Cranbrook
The College of the Rockies offers the only planermill apprenticeship programs in Canada. The two-year Planermill Maintenance Technician II Apprenticeship program includes approximately six weeks of theory and practical training per year for personnel within the forest industry. Planermill Maintenance Technician I is an additional year, again with approximately six weeks of theory and practical training. The Trade Qualification Upgrade for Technician II and I is a 60hour, two-week program offered to existing planermill maintenance personnel to help them acquire provincial certification of qualification for Planermill Maintenance Technician II and I. BC Institute of Technology, Burnaby
BCIT offers a full range of forestry training and will soon be adding a Bachelor of Technology in Forestry Engineering Technology (BTech) to its options. Currently a one year Forestry Technician's certificate program and a two-year Forestry diploma program are offered. A coop option is an extended diploma that involves practical work experience with some advanced management training. The BTech will allow graduates of the Forestry diploma program to obtain a degree and can be completed on a part-time basis. BCIT Wood Products Manufacturing graduates receive a strong foundation of knowledge and skills to equip them for careers in primary and secondary wood processing. The University College of the Cariboo, Kamloops
The Bachelor of Natural Resource Science degree program at University College of the Cariboo can be completed in five years on a fulltime basis or in up to seven years on a part-time basis, following admission. UCC offers the first general year of forestry and the second year of forest resource management, forest science, natural resource conservation and forest operations. Recognized internationally as a leading education to work transition program by organizations such as the Conference Board and Woodworking Machinery Industry Association, the Vancouver based WoodLINKS program is attracting students to the wood products industry and certifying their knowledge and skills. Currently expanding its operations across Canada and into the US, WoodLINKS is exploring opportunities for providing custom inplant training for wood company employees in subjects such as use and maintenance of common woodworking equipment, interpreting technical drawings and accounting for value. Selkirk College, Castlegar
The Forestry Technology program at Selkirk College takes an integrated approach to forest management. The program's graduates have skills in forest engineering, silviculture, forest development and inventory, forest management, resource objectives, contract supervision, GIS systems, field and lab ecosystem classification and interpretation, soil and terrain classification, riparian management, road layout, timber cruising, harvest planning, forest policy, surveying, computer based map production and integrated resource management. University of Northern BC, Prince George
The forestry program at the University of Northern British Columbia offers a BSc in Natural Resources Management with a major in Forestry. Accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board, the four-year program includes courses common to the wildlife and fisheries major. Cooperative education opportunities are also available. The university is involved in a number of model and demonstration forests and has two research forests. Malaspina University College, Nanaimo
The two tear Forest Resource Technology diploma program provides the technical training for a career in most fields of forestry. Accredited by the Applied Science Technicians and Technologists (BC), it provides up-to-the-minute information on all aspects of forestry. The Forestry extension program offers a wide variety of programming aimed at all levels of the forest sector and is available to the general public and industry practitioners. BC Wood's Value-Added Development Centre, Abbotsford
Courses relevant to value-added manufacturers are offered year round at the BC Wood Value-Added Development Centre facility. In addition to courses on machinery, safety, forklift training and materials handling, supervisory and management courses are also offered. Many of the courses take place in one week modules based on the equipment and machinery used in value-added wood manufacturing. The classes are designed to be job related and average 20 per cent classroom time and 80 per cent hands-on training. Classes are also available on a one day only basis and on nights and weekends. Forestry Continuing Studies Network, Vancouver
The Forestry Continuing Studies Network (FCSN) makes information available to professionals, technical staff, forest workers, First Nations, individuals, and organizations to develop appropriate programs and deliver them province wide, both locally or in-house. Since 1991, FCSN has offered more than 2,600 sessions to more than 63,000 participants. Several course topics are available in each of the areas of study that include engineering, watershed restoration, silviculture, timber products, management and others. The Faculty of Forestry at University of BC offers a BSF degree in both Forest Resources Management and Forest Operations. A BSc degree is available in the areas of Wood Products Processing, Forestry and Natural Resources Conservation. Distance education and some exchange programs are available. The Wood Products Processing program ensures a strong technical background in wood and a good understanding of the manufacturing and marketing of a variety of wood products. The two-year Forest Technology program available at NAIT consists of four 17week semesters. Each of the program's six streams begins during a six week fall camp. NAIT's two-year Wood Products Engineering Technology program offers hands-on learning on state-of-the-art equipment. The University of Alberta offers the only two CFABaccredited programs in Forestry in the province, the BSc in Forestry and the BSc in Forest Business Management. Northern Lakes College, Slave Lake
Northern Lakes College offers a 34week forestry technician program that combines classroom, fieldwork and a student work practicum. The Logging Equipment Operator program provides training on grapple skidders, delimbers, feller bunchers and butt'n'top loaders. NLC also develops and offers customized logging and forestry courses for employers. A Wildland Firefighter Type II course is also available. In conjunction with the Alberta Forest Products Association, NLC has developed a CD titled Making the Grade: Lumber Grading Multimedia Theory Training Version 2.0. New Brunswick

Maritime Forest Ranger School, Fredericton
The Maritime Forest Ranger School (MFRS) offers the only recognized one year Forest Technician program in North America. With about 1,400 student/instructor contact hours, the program includes a mandatory, evaluated summer practicum. The program is recognized by the Association of Registered Professional Foresters of New Brunswick and the US Society of American Foresters. The MFRS also offers short courses in forestry and sawmilling through its Department of Continuing Education. The sawmilling courses are available for all levels of sawmill employees. New Brunswick Community College, Miramichi
The 12week Mechanized Forest Operations program at New Brunswick Community College, Miramichi, produces certified machine operators trained in all relevant aspects pertaining to the mechanical production of forest products. The 40week Professional Forest Worker certification program offers courses in the operation of chain saws, thinning saws, skidders, forwarders, forestry equipment and mechanized forestry equipment, as well as foreman and contractor operations and the management of forest resources.
