Deere Adds Knucklebooms to Lineup 
John Deere has entered the knuckleboom log loader market with three purpose built models featuring optional delimbers and slashers. The 335, 435 and 535 loaders are fitted with roomy cabs with fully enclosed, insulated operator stations on isolated mountings, wraparound windows and angled skylights. A turbocharged, six cylinder 170hp John Deere engine powers the 335 and 435, while the 535 features an after cooled 250hp unit. The engines are also set on rubber isolator mountings for smoother, quieter operation. The 535 loader boom extends to a 30 foot, six-inch radius with a maximum 37,200lb payload. At a 10foot radius, the 335 has a lift capacity of 23,700 lbs and the 435 can lift 27,700 lbs. The optional 4800 delimber and 40inch (S240) or 58inch (S260) reversible bar saw slashers are matched to the hydraulics of the three loaders. The introduction of the knuckleboom loaders coincides with the merger of Deere and Company's Construction Equipment Division and Timberjack, a move that combines two "first tier suppliers" with the capability to service the mechanized forestry market globally. Timberjack Group's management includes Mikko Rysa as president, C. Douglas Anderson, formerly with Deere and Company, as executive vice-president and Larry Cumming as senior vice-president, product supply. Circle Reader Service Card #191

Truckers Get Greenhouse Gas Tool 
Smart Driver for Forestry Trucks, compiled by Natural Resources Canada, uses a CDROM and other materials to teach drivers how to reduce fuel consumption when driving, choosing vehicles and components and while performing maintenance. A poorly operated or maintained truck can consume up to 35 per cent more fuel than a well maintained truck driven using fuel efficient techniques, the ministry says. An estimated one billion litres of fuel are consumed each year in the transportation of forestry products. Each litre of diesel fuel consumed produces approximately 2.7 kilogram of carbon dioxide, a major contributor to greenhouse gas that in turn contributes to smog, acid rain and climate change. Based on Smart Driver for Heavy Vehicles, the forestry version was produced by the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC), in consultation with the forest industry, drivers and others. Remsoft Releases New Woodstock Version 
Woodstock 2.0, the latest version of Remsoft's forest modelling software, offers flexibility and reliability for a broader range of landscape analysis. Already in use in Canada, the US and Australia, the easier to use and more powerful version incorporates a full 32bit Windows editor with familiar Windows features, including dropdown menus, right clicks for context sensitive options and common editing functions such as cut/paste and find and replace. It is comprised of flexible modelling language, an editor for creating and running the models and an interpreter for running the model and producing outputs in the form of graphs and reports. Anew scenario management option lets the user produce, save and restore different versions of a Woodstock forest model in order to explore various management alternatives. Some key uses include: harvest scheduling, growth and yield analysis, timber supply assessment, vegetation succession, wildlife habitat and ecosystem management, silviculture scheduling and appraisal and land valuation. DART MSR Now Made in New Brunswick 
DART machine stress rating (MSR) machines are now being built in New Brunswick by Crown Machines and Welding Ltd to better serve the North American market. The basic design of the lumber stress rating machines, by Eldeco Industries Ltd of Vancouver, is unchanged, except for conversion to total North American components and design. Improvements have been made in a number of areas, the company says, making the DART more versatile and compatible with all types of mill operations requiring MSR testing. Vermeer Expands Network in Canada
Vermeer Manufacturing Company has expanded its worldwide dealership network to improve sales, service and support to its Canadian customers. Neil Manning is the new owner and head of Vermeer Sales and Service, a new organization with the goal of seamless product support from the Maritimes to Alberta. Vermeer Sales and Service will be located in new facilities in Brampton, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, London, Montreal and Moncton. Manning, who brings years of experience in the distribution of construction related products in Canada, has served as vice president of the executive committee of Associated Equipment Distributors of America and as president of the Canadian Association of Equipment Distributors. Vermeer Manufacturing Co of Pella, Iowa makes directional drilling systems, tub grinders, utility and track trenchers, tree equipment and agricultural products. Circle Reader Service Card #195

Firestone's Forestry Website 
Firestone has launched a forestry website, www.firestoneforestry.com, that automatically links users directly to Firestone's forestry related tire line page. Concurrently, the company has redesigned its main website to provide information for customers who use the Internet for research and buying decisions. The sites can be navigated via pull down menus, a search option and category combo boxes, while another section will highlight the latest information on the company and new products. Firestone is a leader in forestry, agricultural and construction tires with a dealer network of more than 1,200 dealers in the US and Canada. Circle Reader Service Card #196

Texaco Acquires Distac 
The Texaco Lubricants Company, a division of Texaco Products Inc, has announced the acquisition of Distributeur D'Accessoires Distac (Distac), an independent lubricant company based in Montreal, Quebec. The former Distac operation is capable of providing a full range of lubricant blending, packaging and transportation services to customers in the Quebec and Eastern Canada markets. Its facilities include a delivery fleet, blending facilities, a quality control lab, sales and technical support staff. The Distac product slate includes agricultural and mould release lubricants as well as other branded lubricants. Circle Reader Service Card #197

Cat's New 535B Wheel Skidder 
A new power train that uses the latest technology for increased torque, superior pulling power and direct drive capability is featured in Caterpillar's new 535B wheel skidder. A lockup clutch torque converter equips the 535B with all the operating advantages of torque converter operation as well as the speed and fuel efficiency of direct drive. With production capabilities between the 545 and the 525, the 535B offers a Cat 180hp 3126 engine, a five-speed transmission, load sensing hydraulics, a ground clearance of 22.9 inches and an ergonomic cab. The cradled front axle provides a weight forward balance for grapple and cable skidding and the 15degree oscillation helps isolate the cab from axle movement for a smoother ride. Brake components are housed inside the axles to protect them from dirt and water. Circle Reader Service Card #198
