Trade Magazine Ads Pay Off
A recent study commissioned by the Canadian Business Press shows that trade magazines rank highest among other communication vehicles for providing information about products and services. As an information source, trade magazines out-ranked sales people, trade shows, direct mail, conventions/seminars, business directories, the Internet, general business publications, radio, network and cable television, daily newspapers and general magazines.

The study was conduted by Starch Research Services and G. Gramm & Associates. The complete report is available from the Canadian Business Press.

Oregon Logging Conference
Oregon Logging Conference organizers expect some 400 exibitors to display $150 million in equipment for an anticipated 20,000 visitors at its 59th annual show, to be held in Eugene, February 19 to 22. The show is described by organizers as one of the largest static displays of forestry equipment in the world. The seminar program includes: Sustainable Forests vs. Preservation Education! and New Technology. For information contact Robert Droste, 541-345-3092

Bandsaw Blade Sharpener
The Iseli BS-4 bandsaw blade sharpener, from International Knife & Saw, enables the complete tooth shape (top, face and sides) of newly tipped bandsaw blades to be ground in one pass without leaving burrs.

The BS-4 features bi-directional feed motion and accommodates both left-hand and right-hand bandsaw blades as well as double-cut blades. An unlimited number of tooth shapes and grinding programs can be stored in memory for retrieval when needed.

The company also distributes Wright machine grinders, including the W-1701, an automatic profile grinder designed specifically for bands or circular saws, and the W-1904, a dual/quad side grinder for swaged or tipped bandsaw blades. The W-1904 has a roughing head and a finishing head to reduce side grinding to one or two passes.

Vermeer Remote-Control Stump Cutters
OSB Vermeer has introduced radio remote-control operation for its line of stump cutters, with an operating range of up to 100'. The device is available optionally with the SC1102 and SC502 gearbox-driven stump cutters, both featuring Vermeer's Auto Sweep system. The remote control, operated with industrial sealed joysticks for a positive action feel, weighs just three lbs. and can be hand-held or worn with a neck strap. It is powered by a 9-volt battery.

The device will control the rate of the direction of the stump cutter's tongue, moving the cutter wheel in and out of stumps. The remote also runs the up/down wheel positioning mode and the swing of the cutter wheel in its sweep patter. It is equipped with an emergency stop control.

WOOD-MIZER
OSB THIS WOOD-MIZER Model 40HDG24 portable sawmill plays an integral part in an episode of the popular television show North Of 60, starring actor Dakota House. The segment focusses on employment and housing issues in the north. Marvin Kime, manager of Wood-Mizer Canada (West), managed the coup by suggesting the idea for the episode to the show's producers. Kime notes that the company has supplied a number of its portable mills to entrepreneurs in the far north, with the lumber produced used for local construction.

Biogrind Wood Recycler
Lone Pine Equipment is distributing the new Biogrind recycling grinder in western Canada. The machine is designed to process high volumes of green waste, brush, wood, pallets, logs and organic waste.

OSB The Biogrind has an open conveyor-fed hopper and a powered feed roll to consolidate the hopper load and eliminate bridging. A positive feed system maximizes production and can accept over-length material without preprocessing. An advanced control system allows one-man operation with precise control of feed rate, grinding power and discharge conveyor speed.

The Biogrind incorporates the Rex enclosing grinding chamber design with a horizontal grinding rotor, shearbar concave and sizing screen concave. The enclosed chamber reduces the potential for hazardous flying objects, says the company. A patented lower shearbar concave for automatic release of ungrindables, without shutdown, is standard. The unit is powered by a Cummins 169-hp diesel. The machine is road legal without permits using a standard hitch or optional fifth-wheel hitch.
