Western Lumber Production Climbs Preliminary statistics compiled by Western Wood Products Association indicate Western lumber production for the first six months of 2000 increased 5.1 percent to 9.2 billion board feet. Shipments rose 2.7 percent and orders were unchanged from 1999. Sawmills on the Oregon and Washington coasts recorded the largest year to date gains in the Western region, increasing production by 7.8 percent. Coast shipments improved 7.1 percent while orders rose 3.9 percent. Inland mills, covering eastern Oregon and Washington and the rest of the West, realized a 2 percent production increase. Shipments from Inland mills matched 1999 totals and orders were down 3.8 percent. The production gains came even as demand for lumber has softened. Housing starts fell nearly 1 percent in the first half. Construction of single family units, which use an average of 14,000 board feet of lumber each, slid 3.2 percent. WWPA is anticipating 2000 housing starts to total 1.56 million units, down from 1.66 million in 1999.
