CAE’s Trimmer Software Offers Uplift and Recovery
CAE’s trimmer optimizer software Version 5.6 alleviates the problem of improper wane orientation through a process of wane identification, beginning in the sawmill where each piece is analyzed between its chosen trimsaws for comparative face profile and is optimized for the worst narrow and/or wide face. Each piece with marginal wane is identified at the sawmill for best orientation and the piece is flipped, mark down, by the planer infeed operator, eliminating the need to flip each piece to identify the worst face. Benefits include grade uplift improvements and volume uplift due to reduction in trim loss at the planermill, the company says.

Hakmet Fits Excavators with Parallel Booms
Hakmet Ltd has begun installing Logmer parallel movement loaders on excavators, such as a Logmer model 1610 with a Keto 150HD4 harvester mounted on a 200-sized excavator. The maximum reach of such a unit is 36 feet, when including a 6.5-foot extension. With a lift capacity of more than 2,600 lbs at maximum reach, the loaders are specifically designed for harvesting and feature quick horizontal movement with a single joystick function. The vertical motion is also performed with a single joystick function, increasing productivity. Four standard Logmer sizes are available for various excavator/Keto mountings and sizes can also be custom-made.

Dynagrade Offers Online Timber Strength Grading
Dynagrade equipment for online strength grading of structural timber is easily installed in cross conveyor lines, enabling the grading to take place directly in a sorting mill or at the planer infeed or outfeed. The transverse movement of the timber activates a spring-loaded impact mechanism at the main unit and microphones capture the vibrations from a small impact on the timber end. At the same time, the laser-based measurement unit measures the length. Belt units support the timber during measurement. The system takes up less than two metres of an existing cross conveyor line and has a capacity of 100 pieces per minute. No resetting is needed when a timber cross sectional dimension is changed.

Non-Contact Moisture Meter from Quasar
The non-contact moisture meter from Quasar Electronics needs to be calibrated only once and can be used for either transverse or longitudinal operation. Following the input of the wood species, the system measures the wood dimensions and determines the moisture level, placing it into one of seven adjustable moisture ranges and displaying it on the LCD screen. Operating on the principle of capacitance measurement, the control unit saves the calibration data for up to 150 items, each with a timber species and dimension. The package includes a central control unit, software, moisture sensor(s) and light cells. Optional items include a PC connection, report printer, colour marking system for moisture levels, up to four switching outputs, up to eight sensors for transverse operation and a width and thickness measuring module. Three calibration methods are available including “C value”, two point and multi-point and up to 1,000 measurements per second can be made. Moisture ranges from zero to 30 per cent can be measured with a guaranteed accuracy of +/- 0.5 per cent, the company says.
