Tech Update: Portable Grinders

For more than 15 years, Rotochopper has been helping customers create new opportunities for low-grade wood waste by providing innovative equipment solutions, including horizontal grinders uniquely suited to the conditions and economics of converting forestry slash to biomass fuels.

Known for superior particle size and texture control, Rotochopper grinders offer the efficiency and reliability necessary for consistent production of high quality boiler fuel, coloured mulch, and other end products with demanding specifications, says the company.

Rotochopper manufactures horizontal grinders from 75 hp to 765 hp. In addition to portable and track-mounted diesel models, Rotochopper offers a fully developed line of electric grinders. Designed for optimal hp efficiency, Rotochopper grinders allow operators to consistently deliver "perfect in one pass" finished products at low operating costs.

CBI's best-selling grinder has been revised and re-released as a "B" version. The Magnum Force Series 6800B horizontal hog has been specifically re-designed for land clearing companies and yard waste processors who demand high volume throughput and maximum reliability. The 6800B features: a clamshell hogbox for ease of maintenance; a high torque, hydrostatic feed system; PT Tech hydraulic clutch; and a choice of two Cat power plants. The 4" thick, high-strength rotor core is shear pin protected.

The entire system is controlled by CBI's IntelliGrind logic. It incorporates feed speed that varies automatically with engine load, and an optional modem communications system that provides for real-time system diagnostics, analysis, and operating program adjustments, allowing operators to optimize performance while avoiding costly downtime. The 6800B is available in portable, stationary, or track-mounted versions.

CBI's metal detection system is available on the 6800B as an option. With this option, tramp metal impact is detected with an electronic sensor. The feed system reverses and the engine is brought to an idle. The feed roll lifts and the clutch remains engaged until the engine idles, allowing the engine to act as a brake. The anvil and screen frame opens in less than half a second to allow tramp metal to safely eject. Following inspection, the operator pushes the reset function to resume operation.

Precision Husky

Precision Husky now manufactures six models of horizontal grinders with hp options from 520 hp to 1150 hp, 10 models of tub grinders and more than 75 pieces of sawmill, timber harvesting and recycling equipment.

All horizontal grinders have four optional cutting packages: the standard hammermill; standard hammermill with a knife package; two-knife chipper drum; and the four-knife chipper drum.

The company says these grinders are engineered with several cutting surfaces at varying depths, which virtually eliminates the frequent jamming characteristic of more conventional type grinders. Rotating downward, the double cut hammermill momentarily wedges the incoming heads and the cutter bar, limiting the depth of cut. This procedure prevents wide items from lodging between the screen and the hammermill. Also, this system provides a more efficient cut with a self-adjusting hydraulic clutch.

The large diameter feed wheel allows for easy access to the hammermill and the changeable screens. The wheel has free-fall restrictors. When raised, the wheel is parked against dual safety stops with a hydraulically operated safety pin. All models are available on track or trailer mounts.

The new RAYCO RH1754--a horizontal grinder within reach of the small contractor--is the newest addition to RAYCO Manufacturing's line of environmental equipment. It is designed to be both compact and affordable.

At 14,500 lbs., the RH1754 allows for easy transportation from job to job and can be maneuvered and operated on small jobsites that are inaccessible to larger machines. This unit is highly productive and capable of grinding a wide variety of wood waste materials. It is said to be ideal for processing tree limbs and brush, sawmill waste, dimensional lumber scraps, pallets, and for re-grinding wood chips. It offers an economical solution for reducing wood waste, lowering dumping costs, and creating high quality mulch.

The Bandit model 4680 is the largest and most productive grinder in the company's "Beast" family and is a mulch producing machine. With recorded production numbers around 800 cubic yards or more per hour, this unit will easily process large diameter stumps and whole trees. The mill opening on this unit is 45" x 60" and features engine options ranging from 875 hp to 1050 hp.

This rugged waste processing machine will process stumps and logs 40" in diameter and greater. Like all of Bandit's Beast Recyclers, this high production, portable waste reduction machine features a unique patented cuttermill. This mill allows materials to be cut, split or ground while providing a multitude of options for producing various types of products, ensuring maximum value for recycled materials. The controlled, regulated cutting system of the cuttermill maximizes available hp, limits fuel consumption and reduces vibration. The machine can be set up in just 10 minutes, according to the company. As with all Bandit Beasts, the 4680 will produce a finished product in a single pass. Because most material is cut to proper size during the initial breakdown and not in the screening chamber, material flows quickly through the screen, maximizing production.

The Morbark 4600XL track wood hog is an aggressive, productive track grinder from one of the leading manufacturers of industrial grade grinding equipment.

It is said to be a long lasting, durable machine, and features
a 325L Caterpillar undercarriage with 600mm double grouser pads with ground clearance of 20".

The feed system features an internal planetary drive on feed wheel with no chains and sprockets, meaning lower maintenance, more torque and better durability, says the company. The hammermill has a laser-cut upturn rotor, factory balanced with forged hammers that offer durability and smooth operation.

The 4600XL has gross weight of 87,720 lbs. There is a choice of Cat or Cummins engines, ranging from 800 hp to 1,050 hp.

The machine features the Morbark Integrated Control System, said to be the ultimate diagnostic system. It monitors hydraulic pressures, temperatures, clutch systems and engine efficiency while automatically adjusting to maximize performance.

The 5710C is Peterson's latest generation of high production track grinders. Powered by a Caterpillar C27 or C32 engine at 1050 hp, this grinder provides the highest power to weight ratio of any Peterson grinder. At approximately 83,000 lbs, the 5710C was designed for operations requiring high production and frequent moves between jobs. With a feed opening of 60" x 44" combined with Peterson's high lift feed roll, the 5710C can readily reduce a wide range of material, including stumps. The 5710C utilizes Peterson's new generation of Impact Release System that can be set in the detent mode to provide consistent product sizing or switched to the floating anvil mode for a primary reduction where accurate sizing is less critical. The floating anvil mode provides high production primary reduction with more protection from contaminated feedstocks and reduced fuel consumption. The 5710C's new generation of controls includes Peterson's high production adaptive control system and a fully adjustable feed system that can be optimized for a wide range of materials.

DuraTech Industries

The Model 9564 horizontal grinder is the newest member to the DuraTech line-up of industrial grinders. It comes with the Cat C27 Tier II diesel engine that puts out 950 hp. The HPTO wet clutch transfers power to the 64" wide, 12,100 lb hammermill. The hammermill is fed by a self-governing floor apron and feed roller through a 60"x 40" high feed opening. The high capacity 11.66 cubic yard hopper will handle the largest trees and stumps.

Diamond Z Manufacturing

Diamond Z Manufacturing recently introduced the DZT 8000, the latest product entry in its tub grinder series.

The DZT 8000 combines Diamond Z's user-friendly design and engineering philosophies with innovative features that provide improved onsite mobility, increased throughput and enhanced overall appearance. The DZT 8000's short, compact and durable design maximizes onsite mobility and stability. Its heavy-built one-piece frame design and aggressive 60" hammermill allow for increased production capacities of up to 100 tons per hour for stumps and logs, up to 95 tons per hour for brush and yard waste and up to 100 tons per hour for pallets and construction waste.

The concept for this design came from the company's need to create a tub grinder that fell between its 60,000 lb 1460 model and its 99,000 lb 1463 model. The 75,000 lb DZT 8000 fits perfectly within its product line, the company says.

Building on nearly a decade of grinder research and development, Vermeer's HG6000 horizontal grinder is one model in a series of grinders loaded with performance-enhancing features. The HG6000 packages innovation and power for large-scale reduction and recycling of forest material.

Features of the HG6000 include the patented Duplex Drum cutting system which offers optimum cutting performance and simplified maintenance. The reversible hammers and cutter blocks offer nearly double the life of single sided designs, says the company.

The machine also has easy access screens that allow the operator to change screens more easily and in less time than with side loading screens. The grinder comes with a Cat C16 Tier II engine with 630 gross hp.

West Salem Machinery

Responding to industry demand for heavy-duty stationary electric grinders, West Salem Machinery (WSM) has introduced the Titan Series of horizontal grinders.

These machines are built for processing high volumes of waste materials. The grinders can be operated in upstroke or downstroke configuration and include dual electric drive motors (800 to 1,500 hp ranges) with belt drive to the grinder rotor. Extra long drag chain infeeds and aggressive powered feedrolls provide a large infeed area for efficient loading of materials and utilize proportional hydraulic load-sensing controls. The extra large throat openings and variable speed infeeds are helpful when processing large and bulky materials.

The Doppstadt AK series grinders are powerful machines for all kinds of applications. The main part of an AK grinder is a heavy flail drum that consists of two or four shafts with free-swinging flail holders and flails.

The grinders' advantages include: low noise and dust emissions; resistant machine technology (less damage through contamination); higher level of safety (no pieces thrown out); and no sparking.

Doppstadt offers four different AK grinder models: the AK 230, AK 430, AK 530 and the AK 630. The models are available on wheels or tracks.

All AK grinders can be equipped with remote control which allows a one-man operation. The wheeled models can be equipped with self-propelled drive, which moves the machine forward and is activated by remote control.

The company has a range of different flail tips which reduce wear and tear, the company says. Doppstadt machines offer electronic, hydraulically-controlled material infeed which results in higher throughput. An electronically controlled fuel injection system is said to ensure low fuel consumption.
